About

He and She Said:

New Orleans-better. New Orleans curated.

There are massive, incredible, world-cities you can lose yourself in for a lifetime: Paris, New York, Istanbul. New Orleans is different. It is quirky, unconventional, and unapologetic, but it is understandable. You can get it. We do, and we’ll show you how.

How do you visit and in a few days grab the Zeitgeist of the most unusual and singular place in America? Even more important, how do you live here and experience all that makes New Orleans essential? Sadly, in many cases neither happens.

We are natives, locals living part of the time in the Quarter and part of the time outside, and we eat, drink, listen, and spend our money at all the venues that matter in this town. Then we write about it. We’ll tell you where to slow down and indulge and, almost as important, where to speed up and what to ignore.

How should you do New Orleans better? Here’s the blueprint:

  • Email us at HesaidshesaidNOLA@gmail.com with a question about a place, and event, an itinerary, a time of year, or whatever. We’ll give you the 504-11 on it.
  • Follow us on Twitter @HeSaidSheSaidNO for updates on what’s new and what’s good, alerts for coming posts, and occasional rambling.
  • Subscribe to the blog to have posts automatically forwarded your way.
  • Use the search bar to find the topic you need.
  • During the week, look for restaurant and music reviews, recipes, and rants.
  • On Fridays, look for more comprehensive features on the best and worst of restaurants and music, neighborhood and festival guides, and other things you need to know.
  • Comment: give us feedback on what had value and what we may have missed.

New Orleans better eaten, better listened, better experienced, better written. Better.

  1. In addition to Coltrane, I feel every kitchen needs Bela Fleck & the Flecktones as well as The Violent Femmes. Just match the spice to the music!

  2. How do i subscribe to your blog?? i keep trying but its not working??

  3. Just found your site, interesting! How long have you lived in New Orleans?

He said: Hi Mary! We are both native New Orleanians. I spent my mid-twenties living away before I got smart and came back, and my wife is a life long resident. Thanks for the comments.

  4. Love this site. My boyfriend and I also spend a good bit of time in the kitchen. It’s rewarding to know exactly what’s going into your food and to savor the fruits of your labor. Cooking is life. Life is cooking. Keep on doing what y’all do!

  5. Great site and thanks for putting together the 2010 Big Restaurant List! I just moved to New Orleans, so it is a perfect guide to help me to explore the best restaurants the city has to offer.

I was wondering if there were any Indian restaurants you would recommend? Also, are there any restaurants that have good vegetarian options?

She Said: Thanks for the compliment! NOLA’s not really known as a great place for Indian food, but there are a few options. You can try the buffet at Nirvana on Magazine in the Garden District, and there is an extensive menu at Taj Mahal on Metairie Road. Also, curiously enough, there is Indian food at Schiro’s in the Marigny Rectangle.

Monaghan’s 13 on Frenchmen is Vegetarian, and Vegetarian Paella is available at Lola. I had vegetarian couscous at Jamila’s last week, and the aforementioned Taj Mahal also has vegan-friendly options. Cafe Bamboo on Esplanade is all vegetarian, and you might also consider The Green Fork (they make a killer vegetarian chili) on Prytania and Green Goddess in the Quarter. Finally, most fine-dining places will do an off the menu vegetarian thing if you ask them. Call ahead to check.

      Hope this helps!

  6. I’m traveling to NOLA for the first time in September and I’m so excited that I found your website! I feel a little overwhelmed by your 100 essential list, could you narrow it down to maybe 25? It seems like there are a tons of things to do, I will probably gain 50lbs and leave hungover too!
